Picking a rug size sounds simple, until you’re standing in your living room with a tape measure, wondering if a 9×12 rug will swallow the room or if an 8×10 will look like a postage stamp.
You’re not alone. Choosing the wrong size is the most common rug mistake we see, and we’ve been helping people pick rugs since 1924. The good news? A few easy rules make it almost impossible to get wrong.
In this guide, we’ll show you exactly when a 9×12 rug is the right choice, when an 8×10 works better, and how to pick the perfect size for your living room, dining room and bedroom.
What Does 9×12 and 8×10 Actually Mean?
Rug sizes are written in feet, width first and length second.
| Rug size | In feet | In meters (about) | Floor it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8×10 | 8 ft by 10 ft | 2.4 m by 3 m | 80 square feet |
| 9×12 | 9 ft by 12 ft | 2.7 m by 3.7 m | 108 square feet |
That doesn’t sound like a big jump, but a 9×12 rug covers about 35% more floor than an 8×10. In a room, you’ll really notice the difference.
Other common sizes you’ll see in stores are 5×8, 6×9 and 10×14. Most area rugs for living rooms fall between 8×10 and 10×14.
The One Rule That Makes Rug Sizing Easy
Here’s the golden rule: leave about 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls.
That little border of floor frames the rug, like a mat around a picture. It makes the room look bigger and more put-together.
So, to find your size:
- Measure the length and width of your room.
- Take away about 2 to 3 feet from each measurement.
- Pick the rug size that comes closest.
Quick example: your living room is 12 by 15 feet. Take away about 3 feet from each side, and you get 9 by 12. A 9×12 rug is a great fit.
When to Choose a 9×12 Rug
A 9×12 rug is a great choice when:
- Your living room is about 12×15 feet or bigger. This is the most common reason people choose this size.
- You want all your furniture on the rug. A 9×12 rug is usually big enough for a sofa, two chairs and a coffee table to all sit on it.
- You have an open-plan space. In an open room, a bigger rug helps mark out the “living room” area so it doesn’t feel like furniture floating in space.
- You have a large dining table. A table that seats 8 or more usually needs a 9×12 rug underneath.
- You have a king-size bed. A 9×12 rug under a king bed gives you soft floor on both sides when you get up.
When an 8×10 Rug Is the Better Choice
An 8×10 rug is the right pick when:
- Your room is about 10×12 to 11×14 feet. A bigger rug would run too close to the walls.
- You want just the front legs of your furniture on the rug. This is a very popular look, and it works perfectly with an 8×10.
- Your dining table seats 4 to 6 people.
- You have a queen-size bed.
If you’re stuck between the two, go with the bigger size. A rug that’s too small is a much more common mistake than one that’s too big. A small rug makes furniture look like it’s floating, and the whole room can feel smaller.
Rug Sizes for the Living Room
Most people choose one of three simple layouts:
- All legs on the rug. Every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug. This feels cozy and pulled together, and it usually calls for a 9×12 rug or larger.
- Front legs on the rug. Only the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug. This is the most popular layout, and an 8×10 or 9×12 rug usually works well.
- No legs on the rug. The rug sits only in the middle, under the coffee table. This only works in small rooms. In most living rooms, it makes the rug look too small.
Whichever layout you choose, try to have the rug stretch at least a few inches past each end of your sofa. It just looks better.
Rug Sizes for the Dining Room
In the dining room, the rule is simple: the rug should stick out about 24 inches (2 feet) past the table on every side.
That way, when someone pulls out their chair to sit down, all four chair legs stay on the rug. No wobbling, and no chair legs catching on the edge.
| Dining table | Seats | Rug size that usually works |
|---|---|---|
| Round, about 48 inches | 4 | 8×8 round or 8×10 |
| Rectangle, about 72 inches | 6 | 8×10 |
| Rectangle, about 84 to 96 inches | 8 | 9×12 |
| Rectangle, 108 inches or more | 10 or more | 10×14 |
Tip: measure your table, add 48 inches to both the length and the width, and you’ll have the smallest rug size that works.
Rug Sizes for the Bedroom
Under a bed, you want enough rug showing on both sides so your feet land on something soft in the morning.
- Full bed: 6×9 or 8×10
- Queen bed: 8×10
- King bed: 9×12
Most people slide the rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, leaving the nightstands off the rug. That way, more of the rug shows, and you get the most out of it.
A Simple Trick Before You Buy
Not sure which size will look right? Try this.
Grab some painter’s tape and mark out the size of a 9×12 rug on your floor. Then do the same for an 8×10. Leave the tape down for a day or two and walk around it.
It’s the easiest way to “see” the rug in your room before you buy it, and it takes less than 10 minutes.
What If Your Room Isn’t a Standard Size?
Lots of rooms aren’t perfect rectangles. Maybe you have a long, narrow living room, a bay window or a fireplace that gets in the way.
In that case, a custom-size rug can be the answer. At Jacobsen, we offer hand-knotted rugs in standard sizes, and we can also have one made to fit your space exactly.
